#81 Ponte di Rialto

• Compared to the centuries-old history of Venice, Rialto Bridge can be considered one of the youngest symbols, though perhaps the most famous.
What is today one of the most well known landmarks in the world, was born as a pontoon bridge in the 12th century, and then later became a fixed wooden structure. It was not until around the 16th century that it was decided, amid hot controversy and harsh debates very similar to those of the present day, the construction of a stone bridge, which was completed in 1591.
The bridge is now scheduled to undergo renovation works which will start later this year, to be completed (hopefully!) within 2014.
